Spring and summer are breeding season for a lot of our local fauna and that means more movement including in our urban areas. Wildlife move into new areas for many reasons including to look for a mate, find new territory and search for nest building materials. My property has male echidnas out most nights making a ruckus as they move through the leaf litter.

A simple way we can help birds and encourage them to visit our gardens is to leave building material out. Try having some coconut husks out of the weather in a spot that can be observed from a window. Once they know it’s there, they will visit regularly and fly away with a beak full. If you have the space, a small muddy puddle helps birds who build their nests with mud.

Providing a water source can also help wildlife during the hotter months but always include an escape route. A rock in a birdbath, a secured rope draped into a pool or a sturdy branch positioned at the edge of a pond will help animals to get out of the water if necessary.

Unfortunately, animals can encounter dangerous situations as they navigate through urban areas and cross roads. We can help by being alert and driving carefully, especially between dusk and dawn. Dogs and cats should also be secured, especially after sunset when it is cooler and wildlife is moving around.

If you see injured wildlife the contacts below will provide information about what to do. It is a good idea to have an old blanket or towel and a crate or box in the car in case you need to transport an injured animal.

Vet surgeries – most vets will take in injured wildlife and it’s best to call ahead so they can prepare.
