Easter cassia

  • Common names: Easter cassia
  • Scientific name: Senna pendula var. glabrata
  • Native to: South America
  • Family: Caesalpiniaceae
  • Habit: Multi stemmed shrub
  • Leaves: Compound with 3 to 6 pairs of leaflets opposite each other.
  • Flowers: Bright yellow in clusters at the end of the branch.
  • Dispersal method: Seeds are in pods that open when mature. Birds spread the seeds or they fall and germinate below the parent plant.
  • Control measures: Hand pulling is possible with smaller plants but bigger ones will need cutting and painting with Glyphosate. Be sure to treat all stems.

Easter cassia is a very common weed in the Noosa Shire.  It likes wet areas but is very hardy and can grow anywhere.  It easily out  competes native vegegation and can cover large areas.
