Weed of the month April 2023 Golden rain tree
Koelreuteria elegans ssp. formosana
On a recent trip to Kenilworth (mid April) I admired the seeding Golden rain tress. They are planted in the show grounds and along the streets. With the ends of the branches covered what looks like pink flowers, they are beautiful and easy to spot at this time of year. The pink parts are the winged capsule that holds the seeds. The flowers are yellow and are just as pretty but less noticeable. The township of Cooran also has them planted as street trees. It’s the amount of trees flowering at present ( April 2023) in Cooran that has promoted this weed to be listed again.
Golden rain tree is a native of Taiwan and usually reaches up to 12m but can go as high as 25m.
Its easy to see why this exotic tree has been planted. Its very striking and provides good shade. But just like the Easter cassia (Senna pendula var. glabrata) that has bright yellow flowers at this time of year, its easy to see the problems these plants can cause. Taking a closer look around Kenilworth the Rain tree can be found self-seeding along the roads and into creek edges. They will continue to grow and outplace native species if not removed.
