What is a sedge?  A sedge is a grass-like reedy plant that grows in the water.

At this quiet time of the year it is a good opportunity to sit and reflect on how you could make your garden more wildlife friendly.

Number one in any wildlife garden would have to be water.  Second is vegetation where creatures can perch or hide.

Do you have a pond or damp drainage channels? Here is where we can accommodate the wonderful grass-like plants that either grow in water or nearby. Sedges come in all sizes, provide safe places for frogs and landing pads for dragonflies.  They are a great way of dressing a pond and getting a cool look.

Sedges come in different sizes – little tufty ones up to big tall bulrushes.  They seem to be very accommodating and landscape architects love them for their foliage variation potential.

Check out local nurseries and see what they have to offer.

Here are some images from my collection to whet your appetite.  Who knows, you might already have some growing in a neglected corner.  Remember, as a general rule, sedges grow in wet places, grasses grow in dry.

And here’s a poster I found if you want to know more about these fascinating plants.
