NICA supports the ‘Save the Sunrise Glossies’ campaign. Here is an update on the latest developments.
The building work for the development at Grasstree court began this week. It was emotional to see the children’s response and many of us grieve the loss of the Allocasuarina trees that feed our beloved Glossy Black Cockatoo.
While we remain hopeful for a last-minute intervention, we wanted here to focus on some of the positives and changes that have happened as a result of the petition, started by 11-year-old Spencer Hitchen, against that action that has received more than 58,800 signatures. The aim with these changes is to provide better protection for habitat moving forward. Together with Council, a check list is being developed to highlight some of the issues with Environmental Impact Assessments. These are done as part of the application process for projects looking to remove habitat. In complement with the Noosa Plan, it is hoped this will help guide decision makers, developers and highlight conflicts of interest so we can ensure projects are taken forward responsibly and in ways that truly honour the beauty of Noosa – it’s natural environment.
