Weyba Creek and Esplanade Restoration Project – Dec 2013 to Oct 2015 – Funded by Qld Govt Everyone’s Environment Grant
The land site between Weyba Esplanade and Weyba Creek has been severely degraded through the introduction of an extensive array of weeds (asparagus fern, mother of millions, Singapore daisy, fishborne fern, umbrella trees) and erosion of the creek bank caused by flooding.
This project will remove and treat weeds in an area threatening pockets of riparian urban bushland. Work will be undertaken to reduce the risk of weed recurrence through research, and native plant regeneration. The Weyba creek banks will be reinforced and stabilised by the planting of native species.
Regular community planting days will be held and advertised on NICA’s website. The first one was held on 5th April and was well attended by many keen volunteers.

Weyba Creek Bushcare Group leader Phil Meade has thanked all workers for their help on the planting day on 2nd October when 300 endemic local plants were planted near Sleepy Hollow Drive, Noosa Heads.
Phil said ‘It is now over three weeks since the planting day and our plants are doing well. Group members, Averil and Geoff in particular deserve special thanks for the many hours they have spent watering the plants during this dry period.’
Photographic records show that the plants are beginning the long route to restoring the canopy. In one of the group’s other sites where restoring the canopy was started in 2008, over 7000 plants were planted but regrowth has more than match these plantings. The group expects they can look forward to this transformation of the new plants in 2020.
The working bee is in support of the Weyba Creek and Esplanade Restoration Project which is funded by the Qld State Government through their Everyone’s Environment Grants program, and is a community partnership including the bush care group, NICA, Noosa Landcare and Noosa Council.
The Weyba bush care year is drawing to a close. On 1st November they will be weeding at the wooden bridge site and on the 15th November will return to Weyba Park South to remove some of the weeds which have enjoyed support from the watering program.
