Project Description

The Project

Funded by Noosa Council, the project has been running since May 2005.  The Noosa River Water Monitoring and Nutrient Testing project  is one of the many outcomes of the Noosa Catchment Management Strategy (July 2001).  Using NICA’s boat, the volunteers are  out on the river each month engaged in WaterWatch.

Noosa River Monitoring

Objectives

NICA has continued its water testing program, testing at twenty nine river, lake, and creek sites along the Noosa River catchment from below Lake Weyba upstream to the Upper Noosa River, on a regular monthly basis.  We measure water temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen content, while general visual observations e.g. water appearance or floating matter are also noted.

Supported by Noosa Council

NICA is pleased to acknowledge, with sincere thanks, from 2024 the provision of a Noosa Council grant to fund a part-time project coordinator for this project.

NICA uses Horiba U52 Water Quality Meters to take our readings and considers the tidal movement for estuarine locations, ensuring the river water is tested without the influence of incoming ocean water. Readings are either taken directly from the water body or as a collected bucket sample representative of the water body.
