“A serious obstruction, Oyster Rock, marked by a beacon, exists mid-channel, two cables beyond the east point of Middle Island“. So EP Bedwell, Admiralty Surveyor described this feature of the Noosa River in January, 1876 (“Plan for Noosa Harbour”). Now marked by a yellow cardinal marker midway between Hilton Terrace and Middle Island (now Goat Island), this rocky outcrop rises steeply from the seabed to less than 1m beyond the surface. It reminds unwary mariners of the hazard and perhaps others of a critical but threatened estuarine ecosystem now staging a recovery in the Noosa River.
