NICA’s Oyster Garden Project Coordinator, Alex Western and Richard from NICA at the Doonan Resource Recovery centre where mounds of oyster shell are currently desiccating in preparation for deployment under the Noosa River Oyster Ecosystem Restoration Project. NICA is pleased to be partnering with TNC to launch an Oyster Gardening initiative in support of the project and have engaged with a number of households, community groups, and schools interested in participating. The initiative will provide an opportunity for our oyster gardeners to help the restoration effort by growing local juvenile oysters, settled on clean oyster shells and hung in baskets from their jetties. Once large enough, the oysters are carefully placed on restoration sites to help kick start ecosystem recovery. This project has been made possible by the generous support of the Nature Conservancy, the Thomas Foundation, Noosa Shire Council and the Australian Government.
