NICA’s Oyster Gardening team has recently begun testing oyster basket equipment in the Noosa River system to assess its durability and suitability for local conditions. Higher than normal rainfall in the catchment due to the prevailing La Nina weather pattern in addition to the recent close path of TC Seth has led to elevated levels in the river and warranted a re-examination of our equipment prior to full deployment.  To date, the oyster baskets, fully recycled from an earlier bivalve program in the Pumicestone Passage, have held up well. NICA, alongside our project partner The Nature Conservancy, is looking forward to rolling out the program with the help of our local oyster gardeners, schools and community groups in the near future.
