As part of Clean up Australia Day a litter audit was undertaken along Tewantin riverside on 3 March 2019. It involved a total of 40 volunteers from Tewantin BushCare Group, Tewantin State School students and families, others who registered at the Tewantin boat ramp site, and the NICA River Rangers by boat. An audit was made of the numbers and types of items of rubbish collected.
The significant problem is the very large numbers of diverse types of small plastic items that get into the river system. The CUAD 2019 audit at Tewantin boat ramp recorded conservatively over 1,600 plastic items, 74% of the total number of rubbish items collected, from the Tewantin foreshore of the Noosa river.
