Our next workshop to be held on Saturday, 17 July will be hosted by Michelle Gleeson, author of Miniature Lives.
This workshop will discuss the morphology, behaviour and lifecycles of the different groups of insects commonly encountered in our homes and gardens. As well as exploring their enormous success and diversity, we will learn where insects fit into ecosystems, the ecoservices they provide and how we can encourage them into our gardens. Participants will use a specially designed dichotomous key to classify provided insect specimens into various Orders, giving participants the opportunity to work with some unique Australian insects. This is a fun, hands-on workshop that will help familiarise people with the amazing world of insects around them and the miniature lives they lead.
Pinned specimens will be provided for the participants to use to ID, as well as copies of the dichotomous key. Michelle will also be bringing along preserved insects from around the world and some live local insects.
Those not familiar with Michelle’s book ‘Miniature Lives’ can learn more about it at this link. The book was specifically written with our kind of audience in mind and the key being used is adapted from the one in this book.
Michelle will bring some copies of the book to the workshop but she doesn’t have any card facilities so if you’d like to buy a book, please bring the correct change at $39.95 per copy.
