After Eucalyptus, the Lilly Pilly is probably the most recognised Australian plant. More than just an attractive plant, it’s a valuable food source and there is a type for every garden.
There are around 60 species of Lilly Pilly found naturally in Australia and Papua New Guinea. In addition to the naturally occurring species, the nursery industry has developed many cultivars and hybrids.
What makes Lilly Pillys important for wildlife?
They have flowers that produce pollen and nectar. The fluffy look of the flowers is due to the many stamens that release pollen so this makes them an important food source for pollinators. The nectar within the flowers is a food source for bees, butterflies and birds. Then there is the fruit which is eaten by many different types of birds and mammals.
The fruit can also eaten by us and is usually made into jam. It has an unusual taste, tart and floral. The plant also has medicinal properties.
The Lilly Pilly is a very attractive plant and fits in well into Noosa gardens. Have a look at the article below to learn about the different types and their properties.
