Thanks to local historian George Pearce from Parkyn’s Hut Information Centre, he was the highlight of NICA’s Catchment Excursion No. 4 – ‘History of a River Town’ on 11th June. He painted a vivid picture as the led the group to various points of interest with tales of fire and flood.  This time it was the history and growth of Tewantin, a typical town where middens by the river gave way to hotels and boarding houses for travellers on their way to the Gympie goldfields and the timber camps up river.  Guest houses flourished. Visitors from Brisbane and Gympie came for the beach and the fishing. Dance Halls and picture theatres opened. Guests drove into town or came to Cooroy railway station with Friday night trains disgorging hundreds of weekend holidaymakers en route to Tewantin and the ferry to Noosa Heads.   For more info go to Project Page
