Launched in May 2015, the [25] strong Girraween Bushcare group has been diligently working to restore key wallum habitat in the upper Burgess Creek catchment from Cooyar Street around to Bicentennial Drive. Cooyar St was one of the 4 separate sites for the Fall of Singapore grant (an assault on Singapore Daisy in the Noosa Catchment). The grant started in December 2013, and the Girraween Bushcare group officially began in May 2015 (i.e an official Noosa Council Bushland Care group).  The group has been successful in obtaining several State and Federal Government grants, most recently they have received funding from NICA’s Noosa River Catchment Fund.

The area is home to numerous threatened species including the eastern ground parrot, wallum sedge frog and glossy black cockatoo.  As recently as 2019, the area was ravaged by wildfire.  However, thanks to financial and technical support from DES, Noosa Council and the tireless work of the volunteer Bushcare team, the basin is finally getting the attention it so richly deserves.

The Girraween weeding days are the last Tuesday of the month. This month we will be meeting at the back of the courthouse/ police station off Langura Street.  Some of the students from Montessori will be coming again.  So free up a couple of hours every last Tuesday to lend a hand, learn a plant and meet a friend. Contact Gill on 5449 9650 at the office for more details.
