On 17th July, a NICA representative attended a talk by Dr Bonnie Holmes at the Rural Futures Centre, Pomona, on the SEQ Bull Shark Program she is currently conducting.
There are a number of telemetry stations in the Noosa River which record tagged bull sharks when they are nearby. There is one near the Boathouse, and others at the entrance to Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba.
There is little activity during the winter months. The females have their pups in the upper reaches of the River and then return downstream, leaving the pups to fend for themselves. There seems to be quite a good population of bull sharks between the 2 lakes.
Full results will be published at the completion of the project.
The Noosa River is the most northerly of the 4 systems in this study.
Dr Holmes also features in a series called “Super Shark Highway” currently showing on ABC IView.
This is a 3 year project ending in December 2025. More information can be found on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve website ;
