The Tewantin Noosa Gardening Club was formed 60 years ago and is a non-profit club that welcomes all interested gardeners. The members like to exchange information to improve their gardening skills and each month invite a guest speaker to talk on a different topic of interest.
The Garden Club members were keen to know how they could incorporate native plants in their gardens to support the local wildlife and invited UWG to send a guest speaker.
Our program coordinator, Michelle, was keen to share Urban Wildlife Garden’s story and mission with the audience. Michelle’s talk and PowerPoint presentation focused on how urban gardens, no matter what their size, can be biodiverse. She shared suggestions about how gardeners can help to support and encourage native wildlife. This included examples of how local native plants can be used to supply food and habitat and how the inclusion of water sources and non living habitat such as rocks, leaf litter and logs can provide areas of shelter and protection. Michelle also spoke about the benefits of UWG membership including the personal property visit and our monthly workshops and open wildlife gardens which all provide practical advice, information and assistance to program participants.
Tony and Stephanie were there to support Michelle and talk to the members during the afternoon tea. The 50 keen gardeners present were keen to ask questions and enjoyed receiving the UWG handbook ‘What’s in Your Garden?’.
UWG appreciated the opportunity to engage with others who share their love of gardening and wildlife and to raise awareness about how urban gardeners can help protect Noosa’s most valuable asset, its natural environment and biodiversity.
