from Wave O’Connor

Well after your visit in March to talk to us about the Urban Garden Scheme, we finally got to the front yard and have removed most of the mock orange, leaving some of it to act as a screen from the street and a bit of shade from the western sun. We’d prefer to remove it completely, but really do need a screen. We painted the very old lattice red in lieu of expensive laser cut , rusty metal screens (budget being important!).

We ordered some large Gympie sandstone from Doonan sand and gravel to try to get some structure inthe garden, and were going to use mulch to infill but decided on the tumbled Gympie sandstone and are glad we did.

I am going to try to keep the plant species mostly native, and as local as I can get which means dunal and dry heath species where we are at Sunrise Beach.

So far I’ve put in 2 x  X. Johnsonii, 2 x leptospermum (not sure if Qld native but have a very deep scarlet flower that I hope will look good), 2 x convolvulus  – white, and one a deep blue/purple.  I also have some Ficinia nodosa, Hibbertia sp., Pultenaea myrtoides,  Dillwynia retorta and a Banksia robur to go in too, from Coolum community native plant nursery. Might have to put some of these out the back, could be too much to squeeze into this little garden!

Thanks for the Urban gardens newsletter and workshops, they’ re great!
