It was a delight to see the fabulous turn out of volunteers to assist with the culmination of the second year of the oyster gardening program at the Shellabration on the banks of the Noosa River in Tewantin. These baskets had been hosted by ‘Gardners’ around the river system. Each of the oyster baskets were weighed and sorted to select the biggest clusters to be carefully placed back within the reefs to further kick start the oyster ecosystem recovery.
It was exciting to see the small fish, crabs, worms and increase of spats amongst the baskets.
The benefits will increase biodiversity, create extra feeding habitat for shore birds, assist with water filtration for increased water clarity, improve our local fish population by offering habitat for fish nurseries.
Noosa’s Huon Mundy Reefs are being restored as part of the Noosa Oyster Ecosystem Restoration project, a partnership a partnership between the Nature Conservancy, Noosa Shire Council, The Thomas Foundation, and the Australian Government.
