Small gardens and courtyards with limited space certainly lend themselves to ferny nooks and crannies. This Gardening Australia presentation by Jane Edmanston from Victoria is well worth viewing.
Surprisingly, many of the ferns she mentions are local native plants here in Noosa. There is a ferny understorey in many of our vegetation types. Drive along roads through natural bushland and start noticing the part ferns play in softening the scene. And of course they provide refuge for local wildlife. Teamed with a small water feature, ferns provide yet another area of interest in the urban garden.
