NICA Project Coordinators, Maddison Brown and Alex Western have been busy preparing for the Noosa Oyster Gardening Project’s upcoming launch. The Trial baskets installed along the river containing recycled oyster shells have shown promising results:
- Baskets are durable and were able to withstand the floods earlier this year
- Oyster spat have settled on the oyster shells naturally (refer to the first image)
- Baskets host an array of marine life; including fish, crabs, shrimp, mussels and colony-forming invertebrates
Maddi and Alex have attended school holiday workshops for the Noosa Environmental Education Hub to educate primary and high school students about the project and how to get involved. It was great to see kids so interested and passionate about marine science!

The latest edition of the “Noosa Oyster Chronicle” (link here to the article) is a worthy read on the Noosa River Oyster Ecosystem Project. The project itself is proceeding in earnest with construction of the pilot reef sites in the river expected to commence in late July. NICA’s Oyster Gardening Program is also featured with updates on our promising in-river oyster basket field trials and recent presentations by NICA’s Oyster Gardening Coordinators, Maddi and Alex, to community and school groups to get the word out.
