One of our newest UWG members, Jason from Doonan, is making nest boxes out of hollowed tree branches. The branches in this photo were salvaged from a tree that had recently fallen over on a friend’s property. Rather than burn it, as is the usual practice, Darren brought them home to make nest boxes with them. He has some knowledge about hole and hollow size preferred by different species and so places holes and if needed widens the insides to be species specific. Branches that aren’t suitable as tree hollows are placed on the ground to give cover for ground dwelling species.

Along with fabricated nest boxes these dwellings are giving our local wildlife the best chance of surviving the current hollow shortage. If you have a fallen tree that could be suitable for hollows please get in touch with me and I can pass on Jason’s details. ( Michelle 0412074103)
