At a recent sand island weeding excursion volunteers photographed this little fellow, who Mark later identified as a Wattle Cup Caterpillar ( moth) Calcarifera ordinata. The spines are poisonous and painful, but luckily they couldn’t penetrate the glove. Further information was sought from the Qld Museum;
This is the spectacular caterpillar of a cup moth (Family Limacodidae). This one called the Wattle Cup Caterpillar as if feeds on wattle. It’s good that you are wearing gloves as the spines can inject a painful venom. You can see some more images and pictures of the adults here:
